best laid plans...

per Tom's post, I have all these plans, sketches, collages mapped out and taped up to my easel and then I start drawing and nothing like that ever comes out. Look, instead, a ghost!

  1. Leeslie, why aren't the collages, sketches and plans shown HERE! That is what I need to help you, not the piece you are unhappy with. All that helps me to do is to make more unhappy works.

    Be well Tom

  2. I just realized that this piece, was yours...Merediths! And my comment was to Leslie...somehow the comment didn't go on the correct post!! Sorry.

So, in thinking about your recent personal work. You did a pastel of the road and sign in your piece. It reminded me of Peter Doig's work...vERY heavily WORKED pieces!!! And I thought, something about WORKING the surface creates a history that is akin to how you talk about your existence. This makes me think, maybe you could use acrylic paint and do oil sticks on top, carve out what doesn't work..etc. Maybe a test is in order,...fast test just to see.

I am excited to see the collage of this drawing. You have a great VISUAL story telling capacity. I think color and texture will help that along. I also saw an artist...oh shoot, name? Milton Wynne (not on google, but in 66 W 12th street 7th fl off elevator to LEFT) he is sort of like Ben Shahn, and this guy is on Google! I like him a great deal, wonderful stories and texture and shape..reminds me of you!

    Be well, have fun! Tom

  3. Hi Meredith!
It's great seeing your progress in this project, and how you went from dark and a little scary to what I see in this one which is growth and organic shapes and bright color used to getter to become more dull. It's like fire, water forest and it's not at all dark and scary feeling! Great that you have learned to communicate both, if that is the intention! This makes me interested in trying this medium.
