Personal Final

All,

I need to have each of you write me a short paragraph about what SPECIFIC project you will be working on for your personal growth. I wrote MIDTERM blurbs that stated what you should be considering, and we have all spoken personally!

I want you all to understand that you need to complete particular elements in regards to this process. They are NOT suggestions and they must be shown to me in class.

1. You are to send a WRITTEN STATEMENT of INTENTION. In this paragraph you will briefly explain the GENERAL TOPIC you will be exploring. You will also specify the ASPECT that is of particular interest to you and HOW you specifically plan on exploring the subject (See #3).

2. You will research. This will include written elements (words you have looked up, meaning related to your topic), found images (of inspiration, of images that show material choices you admire, of things that SPEAK to you about this subject you are addressing- any artist/designers I have mentioned will also be shown in this section).

3.
a. You will do a series of planning thumbnails (this could be many pages).
b. You will have small (5x7- 11x14 approx) sketches of what you plan on doing- Mock ups.
c. You will have Material Explorations of HOW you plan on executing this project (this will be VERY SPECIFIC and PERFECTED LIKE GEMS!)
d. You will have drawings that show the FULL extent of your explorations. You will ask ALL your questions in DRAWING!!!!! (Too many of you are writing and collecting images WITHOUT actually DRAWING what you SEE or PLAN on doing!!!!! There needs to be MORE DRAWING posted every week!!!!!!! (You should visit the 8th floor of 2 West 13th...look at those SKETCHBOOKS!!!)

4. There will be a final object(s) that represents your original intention.

I am writing this email to clarify that the loose structure I set up for your personal work does not mean that I expect the work to remain loose! This project is more self guided than the class homework you are given every week. So, you need to present what you have at each phase as you see fit, but I want it to be CLEAR that you should be considering moving through the 4 Steps above in an orderly manner.

We can set a due date the next time we meet, but start to consider the steps and pull together the materials you have gathered so far in regards to the project so that you are prepared when we begin to follow a stricter schedule. This project will complete BEFORE the end of the semester so that you can spend the END doing your studio finals.

Be well,

Tom
